Students in Art II will build upon basic painting and drawing skills as well as knowledge of the Elements and Principles. Students will explore Art History, participate in critiques and complete projects in 3D during this course.

Introduction: The 'Rules' of Art
Principles of Design and Rules of Composition

What happens when artists break the rules?
Can you ever break the rules and still make 'real' art? Who gets to decide what art even is? The art world doesn't always agree. Look at the opposing sides and use evidence to decide what you think Mini Projects included in this unit -traditional vs non traditional- trial by still life. -"Is it art?" written response |
Projects: Implementing the Rules and Principles while improving skill with various media.
The following prompts will allow you to focus on specific Principles of Design and demonstrate skill with one or more assigned types of media. You will need to consider the Rules of Composition for each prompt as well. While I am assigning specific principles and requiring you to use certain supplies, there is still a ton of wiggle room for your personal voice, style and ideas in each project. Creativity and originality are highly encouraged and expected.
Mixed Media- Variety and Unity
Students will use a variety of media and drawing surfaces to create a unified image. |
Hands- Balance and Proportion
Students will use pen and watercolor to create a composition made up of hands |
Surreal Still Life- Proportion and Scale
Students will use colored pencil to create a still life inspired by Surrealism.

Selective Color- Emphasis
Students will use color to draw the viewers attention to a specific area. |
Palette Knife Paintings- Contrast and Color
Students will create work inspired by the work of Jessica Leitko Fields. |
Printmaking-
Students will carve linoleum to create a series of prints. |
Reduction Print
Students will carve linoleum to create a multicolor print with one block. |
Principles of Design- Story Illustration
Students will illustrate a Principle of Design using a scene from a story. |
What Artist inspires you?
Students will create an original work inspired by a famous artist |
Art With a Message
Use the artistic tools at your disposal to communicate ideas and opinions to your audience |
Collaborative Image
Students will combine projects to create a unified image |
Collage- Unity
Students will combine found images to create an original, cohesive scene. |
Clay
Students will use hand building techniques to create original sculptures. |
Memory Project
Students will create artwork for the Memory Project, an international charity organization. |
Creating a Textile- Pattern and Unity
Students will use specific techniques to create an interlocking pattern that could be used as a textile or as a design application.
