Overview
By using visual symbols, artists can convey complex ideas and social commentary with a single image. For this project, I want you to choose a social issue that you feel strongly about and create an image that communicates your ideas or perceptions about that issue. You may choose any 2D medium for this project. Please view the resources below before getting started.
Project Preparation: Interpreting the work of others.
Being able to recognize the messages in artwork is not necessarily an innate ability. It takes practice! Look at the artwork below and take note of your initial response. Is your initial response to be engaged or are you indifferent? Then try and decide why. Look at the images, elements and principles that the artist used. Assume that each choice was deliberate and meant to convey meaning. The best examples of art as activism are carefully executed to engage your emotions and inform you or to encourage you to inform yourself. Click on the following images and scroll through the gallery. See if you can determine the message that the artist was trying to convey. Was it clear? Did it elicit an emotional reaction from you? Why?
Instructions:
Plan- Now that you have thought about the work of others, what issues are important to you? Write down a few possible ideas and brainstorm some ways that you might be able to communicate your thoughts and opinions on those issues to others. Research your issue to make sure that your opinion is informed and be sure to check the validity of your sources.
Sketch- Once you have decided on a topic that you think will translate best into a work of art, create a sketch that shows me what you plan to make so that I can give you notes before you start on your final project.
Draw- Once your sketch is approved, draw out your idea and choose a finishing media.
Evaluate- Use the rubric given in class to evaluate your work. Turn in the completed rubric with your finished project.
