Overview
This projects is inspired by surrealism. Surrealist artist often combined realistically rendered objects in dreamlike or impossible settings. Check out the gallery below for some examples of this from surrealist artist Rene Magritte. Notice that all of these works have a distinct Background, Middle Ground and Foreground. They are not just objects surrounded by blank space.
For this assignment you will need to show that you can draw objects with correct proportions while also manipulating scale. You will be using colored pencil for this assignment. Choose an object to realistically render (photo source required) and add up to 3 other objects and background scenery to create a surreal work of art. All objects should be realistically shaded with a range of tints, shades and tones. The gallery below is for inspiration only and should not be copied. You are expected to create an original surreal still life by combining source photos of actual objects. Your project should also include a background, middle ground and foreground and some of these drawings do not.

Instructions
- Sketch a surreal still life using your source photos/chosen objects.
- Once your sketch is approved, use the provided drawing paper to lightly draw your still life. You need to be sure that your drawing shows correct proportions, manipulates scale, and fills your page in an interesting and balanced way.
- Watch the video below to see how to layer and properly apply your color. Notice how the color is lightly applied and gradually layered so that the final result is smooth blends and transitions. Your colors should be rich and consistent when you are done. If you chose to burnish, colors should also be shiny without any of the paper texture showing through.
- Complete your drawing and grade your project using the rubric below.
- Turn in your artwork, rubric and source photos. You must have all of these components turned in on time for complete credit.
