Course Information
Art I is an introduction to the visual arts for students of all skill levels. Emphasis will be placed on the Elements of Art with an introduction to the Principles of Design. Students will create, produce, and evaluate art in this course. We will be working in 2D with traditional media to develop basic drawing and painting techniques.

Students will look at responses from various artists and critics before synthesizing their own response. Mini Projects included in this unit:

Prompts and Projects- Honing your techniques and introducing new media
Contour Drawings
Students will create drawings from observation with contour lines. |
Positive and Negative Space
Students will create a painting that highlights positive and negative space. |
Card Portraits- Shape and Color
Students will create a self portrait using the design elements from playing cards |
Candy Still Life- Color and Form
Students will use colored pencils to create a balanced composition with candy |
Collage
Students will learn about design principles and research techniques to create an original collage. |
Watercolor Painting
Students will practice different techniques before using watercolor to create an original painting. |
Acrylic Painting
Students will practice paint mixing and application with a posterized image before creating an original painting. |
Hand Lettering
Students will use calligraphy techniques to create a poster. |
Surreal Rooms- Form, Value and Space
Students will use one point perspective to create rooms inspired by surrealism. |
Shattered Image- Value
Students will create an image defined by changes in tone |
Oil pastels
Students will create tints and shades with oil pastels |
Abstract Painting
Students will use chipboard to create abstract landscapes |
Celebrity Portraits
Students will use a grid to draw a celebrity portrait.. |
Exquisite Corpse
Students will create art inspired by the surrealist drawing game |
