OverviewFor this assignment you will need to create a composition using hands as your subject matter. Your hands should show that you understand proportion. All of your hands should be drawn from source photos that you took or from direct observation.

Practice: Drawing hands
I've included a video that shows you how to create guidelines that can help you maintain the correct proportions but as I always say, use a photo source or draw from observation. It's the absolute best way to learn to draw a thing. The second video helps with understanding the planes and structure of your hand. Please watch both videos and then sketch 3 hands in different positions as practice for your upcoming assignment.

Composition
Make sure that you are considering your rules of composition and that you fill your page in a balanced and appealing way. One centered and floating hand won't cut it. Be mindful of your drawing speed, the technique you are using and your time constraints when you are considering how many hands to draw. Stippling takes longer than hatching and if you typically turn in assignments at the last minute you probably wouldn't want to draw more than 3.
Pen Techniques
The following videos will give you an idea of how to achieve the illusion of form and a range of values with hatching, contour and cross hatching, and stippling. Please note that when outlines are used, they tend to be used deliberately and in conjunction with a shading technique so that the drawing maintains the illusion of form and doesn't go flat. The artists also use a variety of line weights depending on the value of the area being outlined. Watch each of the following videos and add pen to one of your sketches as practice before moving on to adding pen to your actual project

Watercolor/Balance
You can add as much or as little watercolor as you would like for this project. Your color should enhance your composition over all and not take away from or cover up your pen techniques. Color can be local or not local (realistic or imagined) but the important thing is, your color and pen should work together to create a cohesive whole. Each part of your drawing should look as it belongs there. It should not look like an afterthought. Find a way to balance your use of color with the linework used to render your hands.
