Materials |
For this assignment you will be creating a candy still life using the rule of thirds and colored pencil. Make sure that you go over all of the following information in detail before getting started.
|
candy, camera or phone, pencils, erasers, colored pencils
This must be a photograph of actual candy and NOT a picture of someone else's drawing or artwork. You will be required to turn in your photo with your drawing. |
Rule of Thirds
- For this assignment you will use candy to create a still life (a deliberate arrangement of objects). Make sure you view the slides below on the Rule of Thirds before getting started.
- You need to arrange at least 3 pieces of candy to create a balanced composition
- Once you understand the rule of thirds and how to arrange a balanced composition you may take your photo.
Colored Pencil Resources
View the following videos before getting started on colored pencil.
The cupcake video has GREAT info and tips so please watch it closely. We will not use solvent as a step but we will do everything else that these artists demo in the video. Make sure that the sound is on or you will miss a lot of great notes and observations about why certain techniques work better than others. The second video is a time lapse without solvent so that you can see how to layer and burnish start to finish.

Instructions
- Use a pencil to lightly draw out your composition from the photo you took. Make sure that you are drawing your source photo accurately, paying attention to sizes, proportions, and details. Use the 9x12 drawing paper rather than 12x18.
- Stop here and submit your photo and your pencil drawing so that we can make adjustments if needed before moving on to the next step.
- View the colored pencil resources before adding color. You should be using colored pencil to recreate the reference photo as accurately as possible.
- Drawings should demonstrate the ability to achieve solid, saturated color and smooth blends.
- Your drawing should also demonstrate the ability to use highlights and shadows to achieve the illusion of form. The goal is to match all proportions, colors, values and details that are visible in your source photograph.
- Submit your finished candy still life along with your source photo and a completed rubric for a grade.
