OverviewFor this project you will need to create a work of art that centers on reflective or metallic surfaces. You can include multiple types of objects or you can focus on one. No matter the number of objects that you feature in your drawing, you will need to create a composition that is interesting and balanced. No floating, centered objects or huge expanses of negative space.
You can use graphite or colored pencil for this assignment. Make sure that you look at the following material carefully in preparation. The rubric detailing your grading criteria is included at the bottom of the page. |
Click on the images below for information and pointers about drawing reflective surfaces. When you have read the material posted on each slide, click through the gallery of examples and watch the videos before moving on to the project instructions.
Tutorial/Time Lapse Videos
Make sure that you watch these full screen so that you can see the details. You can watch them at a higher speed if you would like. The first video is for colored pencil, the second is graphite without a blending stump and the third is graphite with a blender. Make note of how values and colors are gradually built up and layered. Going in at full pressure straight from the start is not advisable in colored pencil or graphite.

Instructions
- Find or take photos of objects that have a metallic surface
- Sketch out how you plan to arrange your object(s) so that they fill the page in an interesting and balanced way. Submit a sketch of your composition with a small area showing me that you have practiced shading.
- Once I am sure you are on the right track you can begin your drawing. Lightly draw your objects in pencil. Remember, mapping out where you are going to put all of your colors or values is really important. It can help save you trouble when you are shading later.
- Use your source photos to add graphite or colored pencil (your choice) to your drawing. Remember, observation is key!!!
- Submit your drawing and source photos with a completed rubric for a grade.
