OverviewFor this project, you will be using styrofoam cake dummies and tile adhesive to create a sculpture. The goal is to use piping and icing techniques to create the illusion of a real, traditionally decorated cake. We will be learning how to use specific tips to create decorative borders and 3 dimensional icing flowers. Use the gallery and videos below to get an idea for what is possible, and then create a sketch showing the colors and techniques you plan to use on your cake.

Piping borders
Cakes that are heavily embellished are decorated in layers. In other words, there are certain techniques that need to be piped on first so that you can overlap your lines and cover any gaps or unsightly edges. Click through the images below for an example.
There are lots of different options for border techniques. Certain icing tips will create certain textures and there are also multiple borders that can be created using the same tip. You just switch up the direction and application of the icing to create a different design. Click through the examples below of different borders and fills you can achieve with different tips and techniques.
Flowers
Decorating cakes with flowers is a super common practice. While a lot of bakers use real flowers or even make them out of sugar paste, we will be focusing on flowers created through piping techniques. Click through the images below for examples of what is possible with the tips included in your kit. Then check out the video for demonstrations and how to's. The video shows you how to set your icing bag up with a tip, switch colors, and pipe decorative borders and embellishments along with the flower tutorials.
